With its mirror-blue water, a tiny island crowned by a church, and a medieval castle perched on a cliff, Lake Bled is Slovenia's most iconic destination — and it lives up to every photo. Whether you're here for a few hours on a day trip from Ljubljana or staying several nights, here are the best things to do in and around Lake Bled.
The flat 6 km path circling the lake is the single best way to experience Bled — about 1.5 hours at an easy pace, longer if you stop for photos (and you will). Stroller- and family-friendly, beautiful from every angle.
Slovenia's only natural island sits in the middle of the lake, topped by the baroque Church of the Assumption. Take a traditional hand-rowed pletna boat (around €18 return) or rent a rowboat yourself. Climb the 99 stone steps and ring the wishing bell three times for good luck.
Perched 130 metres above the lake, Blejski Grad is the oldest castle in Slovenia, with over a thousand years of history. The views over the island and the Julian Alps are unmatched. Inside: a museum, a working wine cellar, a printing workshop and a smithy. Entry is around €17 in 2026.
That classic postcard shot — island, church and mountains all in one frame — comes from the viewpoints on the western shore. It's a steep climb on foot, but the reward at the top is the best view in the whole area, especially at sunset.
About 4 km from the lake, this emerald-green gorge winds through dramatic cliffs along wooden walkways and bridges, ending at a waterfall. One of the most beautiful short walks in Slovenia — allow about an hour. (Closed in winter.)
You can't leave without tasting kremšnita — Bled's legendary cream cake, with flaky pastry, vanilla custard and whipped cream. Over half a million are sold here every year. Pair it with a coffee and a lake view.
In summer, the clean, fresh alpine water is perfect for a relaxing swim — no salt, just clear water and a mountain backdrop. There are several designated swimming spots around the shore.
Just steps from town, Straža Hill has a summer toboggan run and gentle walks — and turns into Bled's most accessible ski slope in winter, with night skiing under the lights.
Quieter and wilder than Bled, Lake Bohinj sits deeper in Triglav National Park, about 30 minutes away — perfect if you want fewer crowds and a more natural setting.
Beyond the highlights, Bled rewards slow exploration: visit local craft and beekeeping galleries, paraglide over the lake, kayak across the water at sunrise, or simply enjoy a lakeside coffee in the pavilion where Tito once received royalty. There's easily enough here for several days.
April–May & September–October: fewer crowds, mild weather — the sweet spot.
June–August: warm enough to swim, but the busiest time of year.
December–February: magical with snow, quieter, with a bit of skiing on Straža.
Lake Bled is about 35 km from Ljubljana Airport (Brnik) and 55 km from Ljubljana city — roughly a 30 to 45 minute drive. You can reach it by bus or train (with changes and a walk from the station), but the easiest, most comfortable way is a private transfer that takes you door-to-door, straight to your hotel.
A half-day covers the highlights, but Bled rewards a full day or an overnight stay — there's enough to do for several days if you include Vintgar Gorge, the viewpoints, and nearby Bohinj.
Absolutely. It's Slovenia's most iconic destination for good reason — the island, castle and alpine scenery make it a must-see.
The fastest and easiest way is a private transfer — about 30 minutes from the airport or 45 from the city, door-to-door at a fixed price.
Not within Bled itself — it's walkable. A private transfer gets you there comfortably, and for wider day trips (Bohinj, Postojna, Kranjska Gora) we can drive you too.
The way you start your trip sets the tone for everything that follows. From the island church to the clifftop castle, the gorge, the viewpoints and that famous cream cake, Lake Bled is pure magic — and with a private transfer from Hey Taxi Ljubljana, getting there is effortless. Sit back, relax, and take in one of Slovenia's most beautiful places.
Private transfers from Ljubljana Airport to Slovenia, Italy, Austria and Croatia. Fixed price before you book. Door-to-door, no shared shuttles.
